Originally built as a flour mill back in 1860 by John Dunn, a mill engineer from Devon, The Bridgewater Mill (The Mill) has an interesting history. Owner Nicolle tells us more about their leading Adelaide hills wedding venue.
Tell us about you and your team?
Warren and I own a portfolio of wineries including Seppeltsfield in The Barossa and purchased The Mill in 2015. Along with our team including head Chef Zak Ronayne, we thoroughly enjoy meeting and looking after people. It really is such a pleasure to see guests relaxing and relishing every moment of a wedding day and we as a team feel extremely privileged to have contributed to a day that is so special.
What makes your venue so unique?
I would say its diversity and layout. The tiered seating areas and elevated stage inside the venue along with our large open air deck that overlooks the “old rumbler” water wheel offers our guests a truly memorable experience. Our onsite workers cottages also provide the perfect cosy self -contained retreat before and after a wedding.
What does a typical day look like?
There’s no such thing as a typical day for us! One day I could be the designated glass polisher and bar service attendant, the next I could be running food at a wedding. Then on other days, I could be at my computer literally all day emailing back and forth with wedding and function enquiries. It’s perfect for someone like me though. I love a challenge and seem to be more productive if I have a deadline, which you always have when planning weddings and functions.
Any future plans?
We’ve just completed works on a stunning new large new deck area. This will not only increase our overall capacity for weddings but will also enhance our unique al fresco dining experience.
What are your top planning tips?
Having managed many weddings over the years I would say try not to get overwhelmed. Delegate as much as you can by ensuring you utilise the support available to you such as your wedding venue coordinator. We see it as our job to assist our couples and encourage them to ring and email as much as they need to. Most importantly, breathe, relax, laugh and enjoy, it’s going to be fabulous!!
